Artist's Statement 1 - STEM isn't all there is to life

While I love just about all things science related, I realized that arts and humanities encompass some of the most interesting concepts and skills that run into every facet of life.  I began to look for the art in science and strive to understand the science in art.  From the structural stability of sculptures, to the chemical composition of ceramic glazes, there is so much that can be studied, understood, and manipulated.

This outlook helped me begin to understand that art is much more than just drawing or painting.  It's about making something that you, the artist, can take great pride in.  It's about conveying a sense of commitment in every piece, from start to finish. Like many non-artists I looked at it from the surface and never tried to go deeper.  Because of this, I will always try to open the minds of others and show the exceeding value that art has, both in the present and the future, and that it traverses every field of study.

There are cases where I love to create, simply to push my current ability further.  A lot of my work happens because I thought the idea was interesting, and after speaking to other artists and sitting through critiques, I found that many pieces are made to convey a specific meaning.  Many pieces are made to show oppression, show resentment, and even self perception, but rarely did I find fine art pieces that were made because they simply looked beautiful.  Rarely did I find pieces that were made because there was free time. It seemed as though people made things to give an elaborate meaning at the critique. So the meaning for a lot of my pieces was, and still is, " because I wanted to". I wanted to build a bike, so I did.  I wanted to make a sign, so I did.  I can give an elaborate meaning behind pieces, but the ability to make something for its aesthetic value is always my favorite.

Artist's Statement 2 - Sometimes the best artistic meaning is "Because I wanted to"
