Hey, I'm Dominique Walker!
I'm a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, with a bachelor's in chemistry. I'm also taking steps to pursue a PhD in materials science and engineering. In my free time, I'm a sculptor and ceramicist.
I'm from Elkin, North Carolina and grew up with brothers who are artists. Much like my watercolor professor said, growing up with artists sucks, ha ha. Someone's work is always overshadowed.
Anyway, knowing art was an interest, I entered into UNCP's intro to sculpture class, at a friend's recommendation, and immediately felt like I was at home. Under the instruction of Professor Adam Walls, I learned to cast metal and furthered my already extensive knowledge of power tools and welding, and used that knowledge to excel at metal fabrication and assist others.
It wasn't until the last year that I tried my hand at taking a ceramics class. Up to that point, I learned by watching friends do their work, and taught myself to throw on the wheel. In Professor Scott Ziegler's hand building class, I had the opportunity to mix my understanding of sculpture with clay and after HOURS in the studio, became proficient in ceramic work as well.
Looking back at these positive experiences, I'm glad I took those classes and will always strive to open minds to the vital role art has played in my life.
